New Dry Wines

AXA Millesimes’ Managing Director Christian Seely launches new wines

Sauternes First Growth Chateau Suduiraut is launching new dry wines.

Chateau Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes Grand Vin Blanc Sec and Chateau Suduiraut Pur Semillon Grand Vin Blanc Sec were created in 2020.

Crafted in small quantities from a terroir ranked as a Sauternes Premier Cru in 1855, Chateau Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes Grand Vin Blanc Sec is a blend mainly of Semillon rounded off with Sauvignon Blanc. The average age of the old vines – planted on a terroir made up of coarse gravel – is 45 years.

Chateau Suduiraut Pur Semillon Grand Vin Blanc Sec is a 100% Semillon.

The two new white wines will be available on the market this year 2022.

Meanwhile, Blanc Sec de Suduiraut will change its name to Lions de Suduiraut Bordeaux Blanc Sec. It is a generous, fresh and fruit-driven dry white crafted from a specific terroir in the vineyard with fine, sandy gravel deposits, where the vines are on average 20 years old. These are the same plots that produce the chateau’s second sweet wine, Lions de Suduiraut Sauternes. The change in name aligns the two wines to its terroir.

AXA Millesimes’ Managing Director Christian Seely gives this overview on the new wines.

“Since the launch of our first S de Suduiraut in 2004, we have been discovering the full potential of the 1er Cru Sauternes terroir of Chateau Suduiraut for producing high quality dry white wines of individual personality. We feel today that the time is right for a strategic reorientation of our wine production at Chateau Suduiraut, to reflect this potential.

“Of course, the production of great vin liquoreux of the highest quality will remain the same priority as it has always been at Chateau Suduiraut. The Grand Vin Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes will continue to be made from the strictest selection of the finest botrytised grapes from old vines at the heart of the Suduiraut vineyard. Quantities produced are likely to be even lower than they have been in recent years, always in the pursuit of the highest quality, which we believe to be key to the future of great Sauternes. But we also believe that the production of highly individual dry whites of the finest quality to be a vital element in the future of Chateau Suduiraut.”
