The winery is situated in the fortified monastery that was built in the 12th Century by the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. Bonpas is derived from the Latin bonus passus meaning “safe crossing point”. It refers to the torrential Durance River which could only be crossed safely at the ford located below the monastery which is about 15 kilometres and 20 minutes to drive from Avignon. The blend of grenache, syrah, mourvedre and carignan is fermented together. Bright ruby. Aromatic. Floral, violets and red fruits. Velvety tannins. Lifted freshness. Very balanced. Medium-plus-ish bodied. Enjoyable now but will continue to evolve and improve into 2025.
