Gerard Bertrand Ballerine Brut Etoile Rosé

This was tasted yesterday, Thursday 8 November 2018, the opening day of the annual Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this sparkling rosé is closer to a light onion skin or copper shine than it is pink. Although Limoux – where sparkling wine is reputed to have been first made in Saint-Hilaire Abbey in 1531 – is in the Languedoc, the wine is fresh and vivacious. The fruity nose includes a floral aspect, red berries, a hint of peach, and star anise. Intensity and persistence. Lively and a delicately creamy texture. About full-bodied. Etoile refers to the star or principal dancer or prima donna of the Paris Opera Ballet. A sparkling wine that spent 36 months on lees in the bottle before being disgorged, and which is as good as a Champagne.
