A Barrel of Champagne from €23,400

Champagne Paul Launois, founded in 1872 in Les Mesnil sur Oger, is out to make history this Friday 14 June 2019.

The Champagne house is offering for auction 10 barrels of Grand Cru Champagne Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay for a minimum price of €23,400 a barrel.

Each owner will work alongside the winemaking team  – husband and wife team Julien & Sarah Launois – to determine ageing periods and dosage levels. Barrels will be stamped with the owner’s signature and will produce 216 numbered and personalized bottles, which will be held in a private location in the winery’s cellars for a period of three to ten years, depending on personal preference.

During the ageing process, the champagne will be stored on the lees to take on various levels of maturity and will be made available at the owner’s request. Buyers are encouraged to visit during this ageing period to assess the development of the wine.

The Single Barrel concept is an initiative conceived in 2016 by Julien and Sarah Launois, owners of Champagne Paul Launois. Every year, they select 20 exclusive oak barrels in which to develop their wines. Each is filled with Grand Cru Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, renowned for its fineness and liveliness.

This Friday 14 June in Paris, the auction of the 10 barrels will begin at 6 pm French Time. Each barrel – the equivalent of 216 bottles – start from a minimum price of €23,400.

Founded in 2015 by third-generation winemaker Julien Launois and named for his son Paul, Champagne Paul Launois farms 6 hectares of chardonnay Grand Cru and pinot meunier in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Current annual production is around 30,000 bottles using sustainable farming methods. In 2016, Julien and his wife Sarah developed the concept of releasing 10 of the 20 barrels containing the 2018 vintage via private auction this coming Friday 14 June 2019.
