Champagne Laurent-Perrier 2008

This was the stand-out wine at my inaugural tasting for the committee members of Disciples of Escoffier Singapore on Tuesday 6 April. Admittedly, the following wine – Grand Siecle N° 24 – was very closed, wound up and tight that afternoon. As soon as we nosed 2008, we knew it was going to be special. We picked up a brioche, buttery aspect followed by ripe fruit including citrus and quince. A blend of 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot. All Grand Cru. Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, and Les Mesnil sur Oger for Chardonnay. Aÿ. Verzy, Tours sur Marne, Louvis, and Bouzy for Pinot. On lees in the bottle for 10 years before disgorgement. Concentration, intensity, persistence of fruit wrapped in a core of freshness. Approachable now and with a very, very long future ahead. Crazy exceptional!
