Plush Chesterfield chairs, a towering ceiling, and warm lighting create an exclusive private club ambience in the Merdeka Room
Be amongst the first to experience a unique setting in Singapore.
Already an ambience that Sherlock Holmes or Jane Marple would feel most at home, The ExciseMan evokes a time, tone, and temperament that transport you to another dimension.
The sense of wonder is now elevated another notch up.
The ExciseMan Wine & Whisky bar has added an exclusive private dining venue.
The Merdeka Room boasts plush Chesterfield chairs, a towering ceiling, and discreet warm lighting. The name of the room is inspired by two paintings on loan to The ExciseMan till 31 December 2021.
Alvin Ong, 33, is one of Singapore’s most talented painters.
My Whole Adult Life captures a seismic moment in Singapore’s modern history. It is the 9 August 1965 press conference in which LEE Kuan Yew famously wept when announcing the spilt of Singapore from the Federation of Malaysia.
“For me it is a moment of anguish because all my life … I have believed in merger and the unity of these two territories. You know, it’s a people, connected by geography, economics, and ties of kinship. Would you mind if we stop for a while?” LEE Kuan Yew
Alvin Ong had completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Ruskin School of Art at the University of Oxford in 2016. Ong went on – supported by the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation – to finish a Master’s of Art at the Royal College of Art in 2018. In 2005, at 16, Alvin Ong became the youngest winner of the UOB Painting of the Year Award Singapore. In 2017, he was awarded a residency with the Royal Drawing School. Alvin Ong’s works have been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum, Asian Civilizations Museum, Peranakan Museum, UK’s Northampton Contemporary and National Portrait Gallery. He currently lives and works in Singapore and London.
The other painting is by Singapore’s favourite muralist YIP Yew Chong whose murals are found in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India and throughout Singapore. Yip has turned his talent to painting and in a very short time, emerged as another of the country’s most accomplished artists.
Stories of Yesteryear by YIP Yew Chong – yipyc.com – was the lead painting in an exhibition of the same name at the Substation and Sofitel City Centre Singapore in February 2021.
