Founded by Wine Writer & Educator Yumi Tanabe in 2014, SAKURA Japan Women’s Wine Awards (SAKURA JWWA) is the first international wine competition judged solely by women. The judging panels include sommeliers, winemakers, educators, journalists, F&B management, wine buyers and distributors.
In 2024, the 11th edition, a total of 4,023 wines were entered from 27 countries.
Yumi Tanabe, founder of Japan’s SAKURA Women’s Wine Awards. With over 40 years in the industry, Tanabe is one of the most influential figures in wine in Japan and Japanese wine. She is a writer, educator, and importer. In 1992, Tanabe founded Yumi Tanabe’s Wine School where many Sommeliers have studied. More than 10,000 students have graduated from her school.
SAKURA JWWA Grand Tasting 2024 was held at Hotel Gaijoen Tokyo on Wednesday 24 April 2024.
Over 800 trade & media guests attended the walkabout tasting.
There were 59 booths showcasing about 1,000 wines from 27 countries including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, China, France, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
