One More Set!

WELCOME TO EDITION 810 of GRAPEVINE

The cliff-hanging vineyards of Alavaro Palacios in Bierzo. The Mencia grapes for Petalos come from 40- to 90-year old vines!

Last week, when we offered 3 sets of 6 bottles per set of Petalos 2018, they SOLD OUT very quickly.

We have since managed to secure another set of 6 bottles. This is the final one we are offering.

Petalos is the wine of “Descendants” or Descendientes de J Palacios.

The winery was established in 1998 by Chateau Margaux-trained Ricardo Perez and his Chateau Petrus-trained uncle Alvaro Palacios.

Descendientes de J Palacios is named in honour of Alvaro’s father José Palacios Remondo who passed on in 2000.

Alvaro Palacios studied oenology in Bordeaux and worked for two years at Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix. At the time, the company of Christian Moueix (whose elder brother owns Petrus) was responsible for making, including, Chateau PetrusTrotanoy and Latour a Pomerol under the esteemed Jean-Claude Berrouet.

Alvaro Palacios Petalos 2018
Bierzo in north-west Spain is attracting a lot of interest thanks to Alvaro Palacios and other winemakers putting their reputation behind the variety Mencia. The vineyards that supply grapes to Petalos are between 40 and 90 years old!! Fragrant, including violets. Deep, rich, dark cherry fruit of concentration and intensity. Ripe, succulent Rolls Royce tannins.

Another way to get your hands on Petalos 2018, is to opt for a set where we combine 3 bottles of the Bierzo wine with another 3 bottles of Palacios Remondo Rioja La Vendimia 2018.

Alvaro Palacios is one of 9 children whose family owns the highly respected Palacios Remondo estate in Alfaro in Rioja Baja. When his father passed away, Alvaro returned home to take over winemaking responsibility.

Palacios Remondo Rioja La Vendimia 2018
A blend of half and half Garnacha (aka Grenache) and Tempranillo, the vineyard is organic and the wine unfiltered. Floral with blue/purple/black fruit, ripe tannins, and freshness. Intensity and persistence. Some wine lovers prefer not to decant Grenache and Tempranillo. Personally, for La Vendimia 2018, I recommend 15 to 30 minutes.

Wishing you A Very Good Week.
