Chateau Lagrange Dinner • Guest-of-Honour, Monsieur Matthieu Bordes

Vines are believed to have been cultivated at Lagrange for some 600 years. The Saint- Julien chateau has the largest vineyard – 118 hectares in one single block – of the Classified Growths of the Médoc

Chateau Lagrange is one of my favourite Bordeaux.

General Manager Matthieu Bordes is also one of the most humorous, even mischievous, Chief Winemaker of the Médoc. Make that the whole of Bordeaux.

The Frenchman likes nothing more than putting on a little blind tasting during lunch and dinner at the Saint-Julien Third Growth.

It’s all in good humour which means the learning process is that much more enjoyable.

General Manager and Chief Winemaker Matthieu Bordes enjoys staging blind tastings at lunches and dinners. The Frenchman also has a wicked sense of humour

Vines are believed to have been cultivated at Lagrange for some 600 years. The Saint- Julien chateau has the largest vineyard – 118 hectares in one single block – of the Classified Growths of the Médoc.

The soils of Lagrange are mainly of gravels but there is also sand and iron-rich clay. The black grape varieties planted comprise 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot.

As for the 7.5 hectares of white varieties, these are 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Gris. Although lesser-known that other whites of the Médoc, Arums de Lagrange is one of the best Bordeaux Blanc you will ever drink.

Next week – Saturday 29 October 2022 – I am hosting a dinner with Matthieu Bordes as Guest-of-Honour.

We will be pouring Champagne Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée BrutArums de Lagrange 2019 from magnums, and four reds, every one a great year:

Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2010
Chateau Lagrange 2015
Chateau Lagrange 2005
Chateau Lagrange 1986

Normally, you need to be a member – or to be brought in by a member – to visit The Tower Club.

I am very grateful to their management for allowing readers of our website to join the dinner even if you are not a member of The Tower Club.

The view from Atlantic – the restaurant on the 62nd floor of the Penthouse – is as breathtaking as the 8-course dinner.

As for the wines, you will feel you are on Cloud 9.

Only 5 seats are available.
