It gives me the greatest pleasure to inform that on 30 May 2024, I will be hosting a table of 15 people to dinner with Chris Hatcher, one of Australia’s most respected winemakers, as Guest-of-Honour.
In 1987, following nearly five years at Kaiser Stuhl and eight at Orlando, Wolfgang Blass asked Chris Hatcher to join him at his eponymous label.
That was the start of 35 years of winemaking.
In 1996, Hatcher became Chief Winemaker and was responsible for some of Australia’s most well-loved wines including Wolf Blass, Penfolds, Wynns, Coldstream Hills, Saltram, Pepperjack, Seppelt, Devils Lair, Rosemount, Lindeman’s and St Huberts.
Chris Hatcher has wine coursing through his veins. And is something of Australian winemaking royalty.
Hatch McLaren Vale Vesey Shiraz is dedicated to this beloved maternal great-grandfather Alf Vesey, a winemaker who started work at Penfolds in 1883 where he stayed for 69 years. For almost 50 years, Vesey was Master Winemaker. During his tenure, Vesey mentored his young assistant in the art of winemaking and blending. That young winemaker was Max Schubert, who would go on to make Penfolds Grange.
