CLOS DE VOUGEOT TASTING
SATURDAY 26 OCTOBER 2024
The last time I visited the vineyards of the mythical Clos de Vougeot was 23 October 2021.
The sun was in full glory, so too the vines, all 100 parcels of the 50.6 hectares of the legendary Burgundy, the largest single Grand Cru in the Cote de Nuits. The 12-Century chateau (built by monks from the nearby Abbey de Citeaux) was just as magnificent.
I first met Francois Labet (below) about 30 years ago. The Frenchman was born into a family that has been making wine since 1492. Labet’s grandfather was mayor of Beaune.
A leading figure in Burgundy, Francois Labet was – 2014 to 2017 – President of Marketing & Communication of the BIVB (Bourgogne Wine Board); President of the Union des Grands Crus (Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits) in 2015; and, currently serving his second term as President of the BIVB.
Labet was Foreign Trade Advisor to the French Prime Minister, helping develop exports of French wines around the world. Made a Chevalier du Mérite Agricole in 2006, Francois Labet, in 2018, was introned as a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.
He is head of the family business which includes the Domaine du Chateau de la Tour at the Clos de Vougeot, and the Domaine Pierre Labet in Beaune. Labet converted his estate to organic viticulture in 1992 and his son, Edouard, joined the family business several years ago.
On Saturday 26 October 2024, Francois Labet will be joining Charles Curtis MW and myself on the panel of the following tasting.
