Petrus Under Snow ❄️

Wednesday 10 January 2024 was special.

A light snow furry was wisping across Saint-Julien and the rest of the Left Bank as our group left BEYCHEVELLE and the Gironde, heading for the Dordogne on the Right Bank.

PETRUS was our destination.

When we arrived, a winter wonderland greeted us.

In the some 30 years I have visited the Pomerol great, it had never snowed.

Last Wednesday was truly unforgettable!!

So too the wine.

I have tasted PETRUS 2022 thrice.

Each time, its greatness reasserts itself!

The vineyard is 11.3 hectares and the average age of the vines 40 years

The oldest vines were planted in 1957. Every 10 years, about 1 hectare is replanted

PETRUS 2022
Fragrant and floral. Violets seduce from one end of the glass to the other as you swirl the wine. Intense, persistent fruit. Rich, ripe, elegant tannins. Sensurround freshness wrapping all that unrelenting fruit and upright structure. Full-bodied. Incredibly fine. One of a handful “Wine of the Vintage”.

Annual production of PETRUS is about 30,000 bottles. Depending on the vintage, aged between 12 and 16 months in barrel, no more than 50% new. As soon as the taste of wood is detected, the wine is removed from barrel. Entire production of the 2022 vintage (above)
