Paper Wrapped

Johnnie Walker, the world’s most famous whisky, will come to you in a paper bottle next year.

Diageo, the drinks giant that owns the brand (and Guinness and Smirnoff Vodka), said it will trial the new environmentally-friendly packaging in the spring of 2021.

The bottle will be made from wood pulp and will be fully recyclable. To make the bottles, Diageo will co-launch a company called Pulpex, which will also produce packaging for other companies including Unilever and PepsiCo.

Last January, Coca-Cola said it would not do away with single-use plastic bottles as consumers still want them.

Diageo said the bottles will be sprayed internally with coatings that will not interact with the drinks they will contain. Many cartons made out of paper have a plastic coating inside to stop the drinks leaking out. Diageo, however, said its drinks bottles will not have that plastic coating.

It is understood that Carlsberg is developing a paper beer bottle. United Kingdom firm Frugalpac already produces paper wine bottles.
