Chateau Croizet-Bages 2001

This Pauillac Fifth Growth was purchased in 1942 by the Quie family, owner also of Haut-Medoc Cru Bourgeois Chateau Bel Orme Tronquoy de Lalande, and Margaux Second Growth Chateau Rauzan-Gassies. The 30 hectares are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. The soil is mostly gravel and sand. The average age of the vines is 35 years. Many – perhaps even most – Bordeaux producers prefer 2001 to 2000. Myself am also a big fan of 2001. It is a more balanced and considerably more vivacious year. The 2000 vintage is powerful but it is also awkward and, in many cases, just heavy and dull. On the other hand, 2001 is more balanced, elegant, pristine, and unshakeably fresh. Croizet-Bages is aromatic, very minty, and with very ripe capsicum fruit. There is also a hint of cassis. Delicious now and will continue to age, evolve, and improve – easily – to 2030. Decant 60 minutes ahead.
