A SECOND WHITE • CHATEAU MARGAUX
Bordeaux has been producing white wine for a long time. In fact, during periods of its winemaking history, white wine was more prevalent than red.
Since the early 18th Century, Chateau Margaux has produced a white wine.
Known historically as Chateau Margaux Vin Blanc de Sauvignon, in 1920, it assumed its present name Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux.
In producing their white, Chateau Margaux has become very severe in selection. In recent years, less than half of the harvest has made it to become Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux. Unique among the top Bordeaux whites, it is a pure Sauvignon Blanc.
The strict selection has been made through extensive analysis and understanding of the different soils in the vineyard plots. As a result, the estate has enhanced its work in the vineyard, harvesting each plot at optimum ripeness.
Not only have the efforts improved the quality of Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux, it has now resulted in a second selection of such quality the estate has decided to bottle a second white wine starting with the 2022 vintage.
Also a pure Sauvignon Blanc, it is simply called Pavillon Blanc Second Wine. And comes from Chateau Margaux’s historic vines. Although it can be appreciated in its youth, Chateau Margaux is of the view “Pavillon Blanc Second Wine will age harmoniously for at least twenty years”.
Pavillon Blanc Second Vin is distributed by the wine merchants of the “Place de Bordeaux” and will shortly be available on the market from retailers and websites.
Pavillon Blanc Second Wine and Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux are unique among top Bordeaux whites in that both are pure 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Vintage 2022 was the hottest and driest year on record for Chateau Margaux. Three long and intense heatwaves followed one another during the summer. Six long weeks went by without a single drop of rain. The estate decided to start harvesting the white plots on 18 August in order to preserve freshness. The white harvest was the earliest in Chateau Margaux’s history, producing a wine with aromatic complexity and concentration. Only 8,000 bottles of Pavillon Blanc Second Vin were produced for this first vintage.
