Yattarna 2018 | Penfolds Wines

Yattarna 2018

Time truly flies. This is the 24th vintage of what is otherwise known as the “White Grange”. For the simple reason it is the most highly priced, and prized, white wine of Penfolds. Yattarna was launched in 1998 with the 1995 vintage. I am embarrassed to say I don’t remember where and when I tasted that maiden vintage except it was with then Chief Winemaker John Duval.  Yattarna has always been a decidedly cool climate Chardonnay. Emphasizing finesse over power, intensity over concentration. Freshness is another hallmark.  It can be multi-regional or single region so long as the fruit is what the team and – since 2002 – Chief Winemaker Peter Gago think best. Designated as Bin 144, Yattarna 2018 is sourced from Tasmania, Tambarumba and the Adelaide Hills. It checks in at 13% alcohol. And comes, reassuringly, under screwcap. Bright light yellow. Delicate vanilla, flinty, steely, tight and taut. A sleeper at the moment. Needs at least another two, three years to open up. A treasure awaits.
