Nosiola is the only native white variety of Trentino, the picturesque region north of Lake Garda, Italy’s largest body of inland water. The magnificent Dolomites are here too, a range of mountains that are part of the Alps. Cantina La-Vis takes its name from the town of the same name and the River Avisio. In Latin, Vis refers to Strength. The winery has roots going back to 1850 but was officially formed in 1948 when 14 independent winemakers came together to chart a common destiny. Cantina La-Vis has continued to grow from that time. Typicity, authenticity and quality are the hallmarks of their wine. Incredible value-for-money too. The vineyards of LAVIS Nosiola are in the Pressano and Valle di Cembra where it has been grown historically. The vineyards are 400 metres above sea level and have an exceptional south and south-west exposition. LAVIS Nosiola is very much a cool climate wine as harvest – by hand – usually only takes place in the first half of October. After a gentle pressing, the juice is allowed to settle before fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The finished wine continues to stay in contact with lees for 5 to 6 months before bottling. A shining green tinge in the very light colour. The nose is delicately, seductively floral, including jasmine and rose – which reminds of Northern Rhone Condrieu – complete with a hint of white peach. The freshness and fruit are incredibly harmonious. Finesse from start to lingering finish. If Audrey Hepburn had wanted be a wine, she would, I believe, had liked to be Nosiola.
