Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2002

Magill Estate is the spiritual home of Penfolds Wines. Just 8 km from downtown Adelaide, it was here that Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted the vine cuttings they had carried on their voyage from England to Australia. The fledging vineyard was officially established as the Penfolds wine company in 1844. It was in Magill Estate that the couple built their home. Today, the tourist attraction includes two restaurants, the office of Chief Winemaker Peter Gago, a working winery, ancient cellars, and fruit from which this single-vineyard shiraz comes from. I decanted it 30 minutes last Sunday at Imperial Treasure Nanbei Restaurant on Level 5 of Ngee Ann City Singapore. The wine opened up magnificently. The sweetish cherry/plum/tobacco fruit was as caressing as the smooth tannins. With a gentle lift of freshness on the finish. Engaging on its own, it was delicious with the Cantonese beef ou-lam pot.
