Yesterday, Tuesday 30 November 2021, Josephine Baker was inducted into the Pantheon.

The American-born singer became the sixth, and first black, woman to receive France’s highest honour.

(Her resting place remaining in Monaco, a cenotaph was installed in vault 13 of the crypt in the Pantheon).

In her memory, the Hugel Family published this photo of a lunch with the World War II French Resistance spy, civil rights activist, dancer and singer.

Josephine Baker wrote in the Hugel Guest Book on 30 December 1931 the following:

“I have two great loves, my Paris and your Alsace wine”
