Chateau Zhongfei Caring Nature Shiraz 2016

Chateau Zhongfei first planted grapes on the vast Yanqi Basin in the Gobi Desert in 2009. The organic vineyard at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains has transformed the barren dessert into a grape oasis comprising 263 hectares. This does not include 6 ha planted for producing table grapes. Zhongfei has the largest plantings of marselan (37 ha) and syrah (37 ha) of any winery in China. Even so, the most widely-planted remains cabernet sauvignon 133 ha; merlot 30 ha; chardonnay 13 ha; cabernet franc 10 ha; and, vidal 3 ha. Their most impressive wines are marselan and syrah of which Chief Winemaker ZHANG Yang (pictured) is particularly proud of. Violets, dark cherries and liquorice. The fruitiness is not as exaggerated as, for example, some Barossa Valley Shiraz. The tannins are ripe and smooth. About full-bodied. Impressive.
