Burgundy & Bordeaux

WELCOME TO EDITION 795 of GRAPEVINE

Burgundy – 100% Chardonnay for white and 100% Pinot Noir for red – will always be more inconsistent than Bordeaux

Burgundy was/is/will always be more inconsistent than Bordeaux.

It’s logical.

Burgundy – white or red – relies on a single variety 100 percent. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir respectively (but also Aligote and Gamay in Beaujolais).

If the fruit is great, all’s great.

If it is not, that will then be the equation.

Bordeaux relies on up to four and six varieties for its white and red respectively.

Sauvignon Blanc, SemillonMuscadelle and Sauvignon Gris for white, and Cabernet SauvignonMerlotCabernet FrancPetit VerdotCarmenere and Malbec for red.

Bordeaux is able to hedge as those varieties ripen at different times.

When the weather shifts and turns during the year, not all those grapes are affected in the same way.

That is the main reason Burgundy is more inconsistent than Bordeaux.

Welcome to Wine 101.

Wishing you A Very Good Week Ahead.
