Talisker 18 Years Old

Photographed at Imperial Treasure Paris.

The first distillery to be established on the Isle of Skye in 1830, Talisker went through several hands before being acquired by John Walker & Sons and John Dewar & Sons in 1916 and, today, is part of Diageo. Whisky, like wine, can be too woody for its own good (I find quite a few Japanese whiskies to be so). And, it does not mean the older is necessarily better. Talisker, for me, is hardly ever overwooded. Instead, it combines so well in measured proportions, peatiness, smokiness, sweetness, heather and fruitiness. Add smoothness too as another characteristic of this bright gold/bronze 18 Years Old which was aged in barrels that had previously held bourbon and sherry. At 45.8%, the harmony of spirit, fruit an structure is near perfect. And, you’ve got to love the part on the label which says “Made by the Sea”.
