A “Serious” Champagne Rosé

Duval-Leroy Rosé Prestige Brut Premier Cru

Rosé champagne falls into two categories. The first is a light to medium-bodied aperitif style. Billecart-Salmon best exemplifies this. The second is a more “serious” type of Champagne Rosé. While equally enjoyable as an aperitif, this type of “winey” champagne is eminently versatile to pair with food. Perhaps the leading benchmark is Laurent-Perrier Brut Rosé. Other rosé champagne in this same category include Bollinger and Krug, whether vintage or non-, aka multi-vintage. We can now add Duval-Leroy Rosé Prestige Brut Premier Cru to this category. Only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are used. Both must be from Premier Cru villages including Vertus where Champagne Duval-Leroy is based. Bright pink/onion skin/salmon in colour. Ripe, rich red fruit including raspberry and strawberries, and cherries and ginger spice. A serious, full-bodied rosé champagne. Do not serve too cold. Best in a Burgundy – at least a white wine – glass.
