This week, I tasted six Moulin de Gassac varietal wines, of which four overdelivers in quality and value-for-money.
TASTING NOTES
Moulin de Gassac Sauvignon 2018
Bright light straw. Aromatic, including green guavas, green citrus, grapefruit, and minerality. The palate of this sauvignon blanc is deliciously poised between exuberant but restrained fruitiness and unshakeable freshness. An excellent aperitif and outstanding with dim sum, tempura, samosas and pakoras.
Moulin de Gassac Chardonnay 2018
Bright light gold. Honey, vanilla, green pineapples, melon, Anjou pear, and zesty citrus. Nicely balanced between intensity of fruit and freshness. Medium-plus-ish bodied. Remarkable a chardonnay from the south of France can deliver so much vivacity. A perfect pairing with shellfish, seafood, sushi and sashimi.
Moulin de Gassc Pinot Noir 2018
Garnet ruby complexion. The aroma is immediately, recognizably, reassuredly pinot! Raspberry, strawberry and spice. The palate bristles with freshness of fruit and a lovely grip of lively, ripe tannins. Amazing pinot personality and finesse from the Languedoc. On screwcap. Irresistible on its own and with pizza (especially with prosciutto or salami), duck, lamb and mutton.
Moulin de Gassac Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
This is the fourth over-achiever of this range of Moulin de Gassac single varietal wines. Minty, capsicum, blueberries, liquorice, and chocolatey. All that persistence of fruit is checked by elegance and freshness. Wonderful bite of crisp tannins on the finish. Enjoyable on its own and with roast chicken, pork, beef and steak.
Mas de Daumas Gassac Rosé Frizant 2018
Bright Provencal peach pink in colour. This vintage sparkling has delicate strawberry/raspberry/white peach fruit, a hint of candy floss, and a citrus lift on the finish. The ripe, fresh fruitiness has lots of bounce from the acidity. The blend is 70% cabernet sauvignon and 30% spread between mourvedre, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, petit manseng and muscat. A great aperitif and marvellous pairing with finger and deep-fried foods and dim sum. Frizant is inspired by a trip founders Veronique and Aime Guibert – parents of Basile – made to Italy.
