HEAD SOMMELIER JAMES TENG

THE MIDDLE HOUSE SHANGHAI

James Teng recently joined The Middle House. He was previously at Hakkasan Shanghai and, before that, Hakkasan London. 

James Teng is the new Head or Chef Sommelier of The Middle House at 366 Shi Men Yi Road, Jingan, Shanghai. (Just across is the 30,000 square ft Starbucks Reserve Roastery, the largest in China).

The hotel is owned by Swire Hotels, proprietor also of The Upper House Hong Kong; The Opposite House Beijing; and The Temple House Chengdu.

Teng began his wine studies and sommelier career in London with Hakkasan in April 2007 (while also pursuing a Master’s degree in Landscape and Urbanism). He later went over to Shanghai Hakkasan when they opened in Februrary 2014 to take charge of their wine programme

Originally from Malaysia, James Teng is a multi- award sommelier and wine list winner, including Best Sommelier Wine Australia China Award 2016; Hall of Fame Chinese Wine List of the Year Award 2017 & 2018; Outstanding Sommelier China Wine List of the Year Award 2016; DMBA Sommelier of the Year 2016; Best New Wine List China Wine List of the Year Award 2015; and, Best Wine List China Wine List of the Year Award 2016.

At The Middle House, Teng is responsible for all their wines including their three restaurants: Sui Tang Li (contemporary Chinese); Café Gray Deluxe (modern European); and, Fracsca (Italian). Each restaurant has a different list and their combined total is going to be about 500 wines. As Teng only joined them recently, the new lists will be ready after the Lunar New Year at the end of January 2020.

James Teng is also a wine and sake educator.

Sui Tang Li features contemporary Chinese cuisine.
