Michele Chiarlo Moscato d’Asti 2017

Piedmont is so famous for its Alba white truffle and Barolo and Barbaresco reds from nebbiolo that we often forget the north-western Italian region also dazzles with tingling unoaked whites. The dry arneis from Roero invigorates and also becomes more complex as it ages.

As for this moscato from Asti, Michele Chiarlo is the favourite dessert wine of living legend Michael Broadbent who turned 92 two weeks ago. The 2017 – on screwcap – is like drinking juice a bunch of crushed grapes, complete with a zip of honey and bite of apples. At 5% alcohol we were zipping in and out of this over dinner last night.
