Jaume Codorniu Gran Reserva 2013 & Jaume Codorniu Gran Reserva 2008

Wines of the Day

Codorniu is Spain’s oldest continuous business concern, having been founded in 1551 as a wine company (sparkling wine was not yet created then). The founder was Jaume Codorniu for which this premium sparkling wine is dedicated. A blend of three vineyards and three varieties – 45% chardonnay, 45% pinot noir, and 10% xarel-lo – there was no malolactic fermentation and Jaume Codornia Gran Reserva 2013 spent 5 years on lees. Fresh and vivaicous. Pristine purity of fruit, including quince, a hint of stone fruit, citrus, and nutmegs. The unlabelled bottle on the left is also Jaume Codorniu Grand Reserva but of the 2008 vintage. It was left on its lees for only three years and then disgorged. Since then, it has been accumulating bottle age. The varieties are the same and in the same proportions. Jaume Codorniu Grand Reserva 2008 is very champagne-like. A very wet and difficult vintage, it is now delicious, and stunning. Brioche, hint of vanilla (no oak was involved in the winemaking), and dried citrus peel. Elegant, fine, round, and fresh. Impossible to put down.
