WELCOME TO EDITION 768 of GRAPEVINE

The second edition of 100 Top Chinese Restaurants of the World 2020 will go on sale in Hong Kong this Wednesday 1 April 2020 at 13 major bookstores.

The 404-page annual is in two editions: English and Traditional Chinese.

In these anxious times, a new book about restaurants – and wines, rice wine, sherry, whisky, cognac and brandy paired with their specialities  – is of little interest to most people.

We are more concerned about shopping for essentials to feed and care for our family and loved ones. To ensure we wash our hands – use your fingernails for best effect – as often as necessary. To avoid close proximity and crowds. To lift the spirits of our loved ones, friends, colleagues, neighbours, even strangers. To thank health and medical workers including ambulance drivers, cleaners, administrators, nurses, and doctors for their immeasurable contributions.

In the first week of February, I drove from the south of France to Cremona, Brescia, Verona and Giarolo. The last destination is a little village about 850 metres above sea level. There are only some 40 inhabitants in Giarolo. My friends – the proprietors of my favourite Italian restaurant in Singapore, No Menu – Osvaldo Forlino, his daughter Gaia and her partner Beethoven are still there, unable to return to Singapore.

Every one of us, everywhere in the world, is observing social/legal restrictions, undergoing quarantine, or in a lockdown.

My new book features 100 restaurants from around the world, including New York, Paris, London, Mumbai, Hangzhou, Yangzhou, Hainan, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Whether still opened or closed because of lockdowns, all are suffering. Their chefs, owners, kitchen and restaurant staff need help.

When good health returns to our world, please visit them. It will cheer them up tremendously.
