Chateau La Fleur Saint-Emilion 2002

This estate is owned by the Dassault Family, famed particularly for its involvement in the aerospace industry (although they are also minority owners of Cheval Blanc, Rieussec, and L’Evangile). La Fleur is not as famous as their other St-Emilion property (originally called Chateau Couperie) which when Marcel Dassault purchased in 1955, renamed as Chateau Dassault. Incidentally, Marcel Dassault was the inventor of the French Miragejet and was the subject of a French postage stamp. I have always preferred La Fleur to Chateau Dassault which is extracted and tough because Michel Rolland is consultant and their resident winemaker and owner allow for that kind of wine. At La Fleur, apparently the young resident winemaker has a mind of his own. I can only hope he is still there and as equally, previously obstinate. Vintage 2002 is a cool vintage. There is peppery/capsicum/light blueberry fruit with accompanying freshness. Medium-plus-ish bodied and very balanced. Decant 30 to 45 minutes. Will be even better between 2020 and 2025.
