WELCOME TO EDITION 759 of GRAPEVINE

New Year is a traditional time for people to make resolutions.

What this usually means is that for the entire year, we had been making excuses not to implement those decisions in the first place. So – belatedly – we make resolutions. And probably won’t carry them out.

My New Year resolution is to break rules. Especially when there is a good reason for it.

Next 24 March 2020, we will be launching the second edition of 100 Top Chinese Restaurants of the Year 2020 in Hong Kong again.

On 21 January 2019, the launch dinner at Fook Lam Moon only featured Champagne and French wines. Next year, we will continue to highlight Champagne, Loire Valley (Pascal Jolivet Sancerre Sauvage 2016 from 3-litre jeroboam), the Languedoc and Bordeaux but will also have Bellavista – the official Franciacorta of the opening season of La Scala, arguably the most famous opera house in the world.

Continue to hold your breath because you will be able to also taste a wine that was in the legendary Judgement of Paris 1976 Tasting. At that event organized by Steven Spurrier, it was Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1969*. Next year, you will enjoy Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 as the final red (preceded by Chateau Lagrange 2007 and Chateau Beychevelle 2005).

Don’t breath just yet because following Freemark Abbey (the only Californian winery that had a Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon at the Judgement of Paris), you will be fired up yet again by The Macallan 15 Years Old Tripe Cask.
