A Best Friend

WELCOME TO EDITION 752 of GRAPEVINE

Dogs are often referred to as “Man’s Best Friend”.

The accolade is an acknowledgement of their loyalty.

As such, I was affronted when Donald Trump – describing the assassination of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi – said he “died like a dog”.

How does a dog die?

Sadly, I presume.

With regret too if it has to leave behind loved ones including its master/mistress and their children who would no doubt have grown to also love their pet and companion.

How can that possibly be offensive to anyone?

Trump also said that al Baghdadi died whimpering “like a coward”.

Add the two pronouncements up and we now have the suggestion that a dog dies as a coward.

It’s bad enough when we talk without thinking, letting our emotions get in front of us and then regret saying something when restraint would be the better counsel.

It’s another to say something totally absurd. Devoid of any connection with reality.

Worse than wrong, it’s plain stupid.

And confusing for children who have grown to love their furry pets.

Dogs – and children – deserve better regard.

Wishing you A Very Good Week Ahead.
